7/9/2023 0 Comments Layers of fear 3 digit lockWhat is it about these dolls that makes them so eerie? I can’t quite tell, but as a terror-inflicting device, it works wonders. Luckily, the atmosphere surrounding these puzzles is often trippy and demented, with a particular increase in the amount of creepy baby dolls in the second half of the game. The few ones that come to mind involve a lock and a number sequence, a bunch of phones and number sequences, or a Ouija board and… you guessed it, a number sequence. Layers of Fear could do with a bit more puzzles, though. You can even flush the toilet or lower the toilet lid, in case you’re wondering how far they’ve gone with this. It’s a magnificent house in places, and it’s possible to open almost every drawer or cupboard, something that works wonders for the obsessive-compulsive among us. ![]() ![]() Having the house layout go completely bonkers isn’t completely to my liking, but I ended up seeing it as part of the overall insanity theme, and the painter’s tiny grasp on reality. Personally speaking, I would much rather have a large, secret-ridden mansion in the style of the one seen in What Remains of Edith Finch. For its share of cheap scares, Layers of Fear also has quite a lot of clever, bone-chilling, ‘is something going to jump at me right now?’ moments. You can expect that ‘thing’ to jump in your face accompanied by a loud noise, but you can also count on some pretty imaginative set-pieces with distorted visuals, almost epilepsy-inducing moments, gravity defying horror and a lot more. Why? Because Layers of Fear isn’t only about jumpscares Layers of Fear has a wonderfully twisted atmosphere with some truly creepy, bloodcurdling moments. Now, with the story nicely wrapped and my thoughts set in place, I have to say that I’m willing to give Layers of Fear a pass on that department. And by that, I mean a lot! This is a cheap tactic that most weak horror movies and games resort too, and about an hour or so into the story, this one was starting to go down that road far too often. I must confess that I’m not the biggest fan of jumpscares, and Layers of Fear has a lot of them. It’s rather fascinating, occasionally morbid, and definitely insane – Layers of Fear is heavily story-based and does it right. Don’t worry, it’s not as boring as it sounds, especially because you get to discover the story that lead to these mysterious events involving your wife and child. Otherwise, you follow your path just as in any other walking simulator, find the action or spot that triggers the next scene, and move on. Layers of Fear is a completely linear game, apart from the odd collectible or two, which may lead you to one of three possible endings. ![]() Being an artist, you’ll find your surroundings filled with artwork, portraits, brushstrokes everywhere… Well, at least from the moment when your character starts having some serious hallucinations. One thing must be said about Layers of Fear – it puts quite an original spin on the haunted house genre. You’re a tortured artist (aren’t they all?), a painter in search of inspiration in this game set in a lovely yet haunting Victorian-era mansion, and the objective is to complete your painting, your magnum opus.Įven if it means tripping quite a bit along the way. Layers of Fear is a psychological horror adventure that provides an exciting build-up for the reveal of your definitive work of art.
